When you put the camera into 'PC' mode, and then plug it in to the computer, it should appear on your desktop as a removable drive. You should then be able to copy the pictures from it like you would any other disk drive. Are you making sure that it is in it's 'PC' mode?
What exactly is it doing when you plug it in. You may need drivers. But, it's very rare to need camera drivers with a Mac. Have you installed the software that came with the camera? Perhaps it had an installer that would place the necessary software on your computer. It's also possible that the software that came with it is not a 'Universal Binary'. Meaning that if you have an Intel Mac, that it may or may not work as expected.
