According to the Apple KB article about included drivers with Mac OS X 10.6 the HP Deskjet D2400 series v3.0.3 driver that was downloaded is correct - there is no Gutenprint driver for this model.

It usually resolves printing problems rather than creating them. Given that the printer was recognized by the operating system and it downloaded the correct driver for the model, this would indicate that there is some level of communication occurring between the Mac and printer but something is still amiss with the printing system. If the print queue is showing that the print job has completed, then this would explain the lack of entry in the cups error log. There is a method to enable full debugging so that you can see everything that transpires when you do select to print, however I feel that even with this setting enabled there may not be any information that will assist with resolving this. Still at this stage it may be worth trying.
If you open your web browser and type there is a setting 'Save debugging information for troubleshooting'. Enable this checkbox and then click the 'Change Settings' button. You will then be prompted to enter your admin account name, which is your account name if you have only one account on the Mac, and the password for your admin account.
