As you have two MacBook Pro machine and both have Mac OSX 10.9 Mavericks so you can create a bootable USB from your working Mac machine. Once you have successfully created a bootable USB then you can use it to boot your non-working Mac and to repair the volume. Please feel free to get back to us for any further query.
Unless you bought your camera directly from Canon, then Canon was not involved 'at the time of camera purchase.' And, if you bought your camera from Canon, there is a disclaimer.
