A Raisin in the Sun By Lorraine Hansberry A Raisin in the Sun is a play based of the actual events of Lorraine Hansberry's life. Lorraine was born in Chicago Illinois on May 19 1930. She is the youngest of four children. Lorraine was also the granddaughter of freed slaves. Lorraine went to the University of Wisconsin, Art Institute of Chicago, and Roosevelt University New School for Social Research Hansberry's father was a successful real estate broker and her mother was a schoolteacher. Lorraine met Robert Nemiroff who was a jewish songwriter. They got married in 1953 but later divorced in 1962.

Sadly Hansberry died of pancreatic cancer on January 12 1965 at the age of 34. The play is set in the Chicago Southside during World War II Ruth Younger, Travis Younger,Walter Lee Younger, Beneatha Younger and Lena Younger are an African- American family living in a small apartment together. Ruth and Walter Lee have a 10 year old son named Travis. Lena is Walter Lee and Beneatha mother. Sadly Lena's husband has passed away, leaving her with a large sum of money for this lower class family.

Now Lena must decide what to do with the money. Walter Lee wants Lena to invest it in his dream of opening a liquor store. Ruth wants Lena to invest the money in a new house.

But,Beneatha could use the money for school. So finally Lena receives the money and must make a decision. She ends up giving some of the money to Beneatha, some to Walter and the rest goes into a down payment for a house.

The only problem is, the house is in an all white neighborhood. Hgtv home design mac trial. Read A Raisin in the Sun to find out how the Younger family breaks through the wall of segregation in this inspiring and enlightening play. I decided to read A Raisin in the Sun for several reasons. One being that I can relate with the Younger family to a certain degree.

I picked A Raisin in the Sun for one reason and one reason only. I can relate to the Younger family. My favorite element of the book was the communication between the entire family. Along the Younger families journey they experience many unexpected things! Some people may interpret the communication between the family as rude and short tempered but I interpret it much differently. I think the way they communicate is very funny and it just shows that no matter how rude they may seem to one another their love for one another is strong enough to ignore the rudeness.

The most impactful element of A Raisin in the Sun was the emotional strength of the entire family. For the role of Ruth I would choose Angela Basset. (played in Malcolm X) I would cast Terrence Howard as Walter Lee.(played in Iron Man) For Lena I would cast Queen Latifah. For Beneatha I would cast Jazz Raycole. (professional dancer) For Travis I would cast Jaden Smith. (Karate Kid).
